When my son Kaleb was eight, I was told that he had difficulty sustaining attention beyond 30 minutes. Yet I watched that same brilliant child spend four hours building intricate LEGO designs.

That was when I realized: the problem was not a lack of intelligence or potential. We simply did not yet understand that his brain was wired brilliantly and beautifully—and that his attention came alive through creativity, challenge and purpose.

I stopped asking, “What is wrong with him?” and started asking, “What makes his brilliance come alive?”
